It’s Time to Celebrate Homeschoolers! Learn about World Homeschooler’s Day

The idea for World Homeschooler’s Day came from asking a simple question:

Why are homeschool-related holidays and events always faith-based, focused on homeschooling’s nuts and bolts, and only encouraging to mothers and not the whole family?

Crazy, right? With all of the homeschool community’s progress since the 1970s, there has yet to be an international holiday created to celebrate homeschoolers’ hard work, dedication, and achievements from all walks of life, irrespective of their religion or lack thereof.

I created World Homeschooler’s Day to change that.

This holiday is an opportunity for homeschoolers to acknowledge their individual and collective journeys and participate in a holiday made by and for homeschoolers worldwide. As a veteran homeschooler of almost nine years, I know that this radical act of self-acknowledgment and self-love doesn’t happen enough in the homeschool community. Every family is walking their winding path through homeschooling, and that’s something to be acknowledged and honored. Having an international day isn’t just nice to have. It’s a way to declare that homeschool families are proud of who we are and what we do and that our work is important, powerful, and matters.

World Homeschooler’s Day is the first Friday in June. Here are a few ways to celebrate:

  • Plan a party with your family and other homeschool families (virtually or socially distanced, of course)
  • Have a day at the park, beach, or somewhere else fun with family
  • Make or buy donuts as a treat (It’s also National Donut Day!)
  • Play board games, watch a movie, or do crafts as a family
  • Look at pictures and videos of your homeschool adventures over the years
  • Take pictures of each family member and include a caption on what they like best about homeschooling
  • Post pictures and/or videos on social media sharing your family’s appreciation for homeschooling

I’d love for you to share some ideas in the comments. How do you plan to celebrate?

I hope you’re as excited as I am!
